Worked Slate Market Size in Norway
In 2022, the Norwegian worked slate market was finally on the rise to reach $X after nine years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a sharp reduction. Worked slate consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of worked slate exported from Norway fell notably to X tons, waning by -16.3% on 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 291% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, worked slate exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 55%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sweden (X tons), Luxembourg (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of worked slate exports from Norway, together accounting for 60% of total exports. Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +21.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the key foreign market for worked slate exports from Norway, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden stood at +1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-4.0% per year) and Denmark (+4.7% per year).

The average worked slate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Worked Slate Imports
Imports into Norway
After seven years of decline, supplies from abroad of worked slate increased by 57% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 59%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, worked slate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw temperate growth. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest worked slate supplier to Norway, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, worked slate imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X tons), more than tenfold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+14.6% per year) and Greece (-9.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to Norway, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Greece, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+24.7% per year) and Greece (-1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average worked slate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, worked slate import price increased by +75.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
