Yemen (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Oman, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Yemen exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Yemen totaled +32.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-11.8% per year) and Qatar (-6.8% per year).
In value terms, Yemen ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Qatar ($X) constituted the largest markets for barley exported from Oman worldwide.
Yemen, with a CAGR of +28.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average barley export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 1.4%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Barley Imports
Imports into Oman
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of barley decreased by -5.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, barley imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 48%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
Argentina (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Oman, together accounting for 88% of total imports. Ukraine, Russia and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Oman, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Argentina amounted to +29.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+24.0% per year) and Australia (-3.0% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while the price for Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
