Cassava Market Size in Oman

The Omani cassava market declined to $X in 2022, waning by -12.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the fourth year in a row, Oman recorded growth in shipments abroad of cassava, which increased by 99% to X tons in 2018. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 414% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2018 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cassava exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2018. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 1,198%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Qatar (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from Oman, accounting for a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, cassava exports to Qatar exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold.

From 2015 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Qatar stood at +53.2%.

In value terms, Qatar ($X) remains the key foreign market for cassava exports from Oman, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

From 2015 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Qatar totaled -20.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The average cassava export price stood at $X per ton in 2018, waning by -59.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 153% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.

From 2015 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (-48.0%).

Imports into Oman

In 2022, imports of cassava into Oman fell to X tons, declining by -12.5% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +16.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 45%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cassava imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 48%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the main suppliers of cassava imports to Oman, with a combined 97% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, which accounted for a further 3.1%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +15.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) constituted the largest cassava suppliers to Oman, together accounting for 97% of total imports.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +24.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cassava import price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
