In 2022, the Omani dry bean market decreased by -64.4% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of beans (dry) increased by 6.3% to X tons, rising for the seventh consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Yemen (X tons) was the main destination for dry bean exports from Oman, with a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, dry bean exports to Yemen exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), ninefold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Yemen amounted to +450.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+0.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-23.6% per year).

In value terms, Yemen ($X) remains the key foreign market for beans (dry) exports from Oman, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Yemen amounted to +406.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (-4.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-19.4% per year).

In 2022, the average dry bean export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 13%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lebanon (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of beans (dry) decreased by -63.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after nine years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), China (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) were the main suppliers of dry bean imports to Oman, with a combined 71% share of total imports. Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of +47.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of beans (dry) to Oman, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+34.5% per year) and Madagascar (+29.3% per year).

The average dry bean import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
