Exports from Oman

In 2022, overseas shipments of grapefruits decreased by -22.4% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 451% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 302%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Qatar (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iran (X kg) were the main destinations of grapefruit exports from Oman, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +99.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Qatar ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for grapefruits exports from Oman, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Qatar stood at +84.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+5.6% per year) and Iran (-1.0% per year).

The average grapefruit export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 55%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (-2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Oman

In 2022, the amount of grapefruits imported into Oman declined rapidly to X tons, waning by -21.6% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 78%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruit to Oman, with a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +24.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+41.5% per year) and Turkey (-5.4% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruits to Oman, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +44.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+66.0% per year) and Egypt (+42.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average grapefruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grapefruit import price increased by +125.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
