The Omani nutmeg, mace and cardamom market expanded to $X in 2022, rising by 4.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms increased by 6.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 412%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 241% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Yemen (X tons) was the main destination for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Oman, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports to Yemen exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Yemen stood at +205.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+15.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-7.8% per year).
In value terms, Yemen ($X), India ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest markets for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exported from Oman worldwide, together comprising 79% of total exports.
Yemen, with a CAGR of +265.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -17.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+90.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nutmeg, Mace And Cardamoms
Imports into Oman
In 2022, overseas purchases of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -0.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 82%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier to Oman, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guatemala (X tons), fivefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at +13.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guatemala (+4.9% per year) and India (+3.7% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms to Oman, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates stood at +28.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+188.5% per year) and India (+4.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the price for Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
