The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
In value terms, onion and shallot exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 104%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for onion and shallot exports from Oman, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, onion and shallot exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), fourfold. Kuwait (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +15.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+17.6% per year) and Kuwait (+31.3% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for onions and shallots exports from Oman, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates stood at +8.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+16.6% per year) and Kuwait (+31.2% per year).

In 2022, the average onion and shallot export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 371% against the previous year. Imports into Oman
In 2022, overseas purchases of onions and shallots were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) were the main suppliers of onion and shallot imports to Oman, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +54.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X), Yemen ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest onion and shallot suppliers to Oman, together comprising 71% of total imports. Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
Among the main suppliers, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +49.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
