Papaya Market Size in Oman

The Omani papaya market rose modestly to $X in 2022, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -3.5% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 78%. Papaya production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of papayas in Oman reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average papaya yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The papaya harvested area in Oman amounted to X ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 60%. The papaya harvested area peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports from Oman

In 2022, shipments abroad of papayas decreased by -5.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 449%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, papaya exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 521% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for papaya exports from Oman, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bahrain (X tons), with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +24.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (+127.1% per year) and Bahrain (+35.9% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Qatar ($X) and Bahrain ($X) were the largest markets for papaya exported from Oman worldwide, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Qatar, with a CAGR of +129.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average papaya export price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 79% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+28.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Oman

In 2022, imports of papayas into Oman fell to X tons, shrinking by -5.9% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 711%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, papaya imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 801% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest papaya supplier to Oman, with a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, papaya imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +27.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+62.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+0.1% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papayas to Oman, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand amounted to +67.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+4.6% per year) and India (+27.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average papaya import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
