In 2021, the Pakistani market for hot-rolled steel bars and rods was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a noticeable increase. Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports from Pakistan, with a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), fivefold. Afghanistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burundi was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (-39.0% per year) and Afghanistan (-26.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for hot-rolled steel bar and rod exported from Pakistan were Burundi ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Qatar, the United States and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further 16%.

The United States, with a CAGR of +82.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of hot-rolled steel bars and rods, when their volume increased by 14% to X tons. Overall, imports enjoyed perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 63%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest hot-rolled steel bar and rod supplier to Pakistan, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-0.1% per year) and Canada (+5.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hot-rolled steel bars and rods to Pakistan, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+1.9% per year) and Canada (+7.1% per year).
