In 2021, the Pakistani coffee extract market decreased by -6.2% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, the total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +68.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 33%. In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were exported from Pakistan; shrinking by -37.7% compared with the year before. In general, exports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 164% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coffee extract exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 136%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Afghanistan (X tons) was the main destination for coffee extract exports from Pakistan, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee extract exports to Afghanistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X kg), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Afghanistan totaled +5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+2.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-5.2% per year).
In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for coffee extracts, essences and concentrates exports from Pakistan, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Afghanistan amounted to +3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+7.5% per year) and the United States (-19.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average coffee extract export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, coffee extract export price decreased by -0.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 64%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+25.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan
In 2021, overseas purchases of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 159% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coffee extract imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 231% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest coffee extract supplier to Pakistan, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, coffee extract imports from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X tons), with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Malaysia amounted to +67.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+12.3% per year) and Thailand (+4.7% per year).
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates to Pakistan, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Malaysia totaled +73.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+20.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+44.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average coffee extract import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 36%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
