Cotton Lint Market Size in Pakistan

The Pakistani cotton lint market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of cotton lint increased by 3.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton lint exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of cotton lint exports from Pakistan, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of -17.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for cotton lint exported from Pakistan were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 100% of total exports.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of -16.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2022, overseas purchases of cotton lint decreased by -11.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, cotton lint imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton lint imports to Pakistan, with a combined 64% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +72.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Brazil ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the largest cotton lint suppliers to Pakistan, together accounting for 61% of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +76.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cotton lint import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
