The Pakistani dried or salted fish market shrank notably to $X in 2021, dropping by -15.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Dried or salted fish consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried or salted fish production contracted dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +32.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of dried or salted fish exported from Pakistan fell notably to X tons, declining by -66.4% against 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 187%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dried or salted fish exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 229%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Sri Lanka (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main destinations of dried or salted fish exports from Pakistan, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Japan, Singapore, China and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) remains the key foreign market for dried or salted fish exports from Pakistan, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sri Lanka amounted to +33.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+26.0% per year) and Japan (+22.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average dried or salted fish export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -13.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Dried Or Salted Fish
Imports into Pakistan
In 2021, the amount of dried or salted fish imported into Pakistan dropped to X kg, shrinking by -6.2% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports showed a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dried or salted fish imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Korea (X kg) constituted the largest dried or salted fish supplier to Pakistan, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, dried or salted fish imports from South Korea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Nigeria (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Korea totaled -21.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-8.8% per year) and Thailand (-29.3% per year).
In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dried or salted fish to Pakistan, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from South Korea totaled -4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-13.9% per year) and Nigeria (-4.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average dried or salted fish import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 88% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+22.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
