Ethanol Market Size in Pakistan
In 2022, the Pakistani ethanol market decreased by -8.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. Exports from Pakistan
In 2022, overseas shipments of ethyl alcohol increased by 44% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 91%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
In value terms, ethanol exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 99%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X litres), Spain (X litres) and South Korea (X litres) were the main destinations of ethanol exports from Pakistan, together accounting for 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Ghana, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 53%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +44.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest markets for ethanol exported from Pakistan worldwide, together comprising 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), the United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Thailand, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 52%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +40.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average ethanol export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Pakistan
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of ethyl alcohol, when their volume decreased by -43.1% to X litres. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 581% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, ethanol imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 440%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X litres), South Africa (X litres) and the United States (X litres) were the main suppliers of ethanol imports to Pakistan, with a combined 97% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +44.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), South Africa ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest ethanol suppliers to Pakistan, together accounting for 95% of total imports.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +34.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average ethanol import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per litre), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
