Graphite Market Size in Pakistan

After five years of growth, the Pakistani graphite market decreased by -1.4% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 604%. Exports from Pakistan

In 2021, overseas shipments of graphite (natural) decreased by -81.8% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 163% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 107% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for graphite exports from Pakistan, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, graphite exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mozambique (X kg), twofold. Sudan (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya stood at -6.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (-30.3% per year) and Sudan (+2.4% per year).

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Sudan ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest markets for graphite exported from Pakistan worldwide, with a combined 63% share of total exports.

Sudan, with a CAGR of -4.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+62.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Graphite imports into Pakistan expanded sharply to X tons in 2021, picking up by 15% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +82.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest graphite supplier to Pakistan, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+17.5% per year) and Germany (+16.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Pakistan, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+23.2% per year) and Germany (+21.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average graphite import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 49% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 491% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) and Sri Lanka ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
