The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,315% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, herbicide exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,635% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for herbicide exports from Pakistan, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, herbicide exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at +63.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+51.5% per year) and Bangladesh (+45.5% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for herbicides exports from Pakistan, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands amounted to +82.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+51.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+62.5% per year).

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of herbicides decreased by -27.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, herbicide imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest herbicide supplier to Pakistan, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, herbicide imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +9.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+4.8% per year) and India (-0.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of herbicides to Pakistan, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+13.4% per year) and Germany (+6.2% per year).

In 2021, the average herbicide import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
