In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Pakistani inactive yeast market, when its value decreased by -17.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

For the third year in a row, Pakistan recorded decline in shipments abroad of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms, which decreased by -84.4% to X kg in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 426% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, inactive yeast exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 517%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Canada (X kg) was the main destination for inactive yeast exports from Pakistan, accounting for a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, inactive yeast exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada totaled +16.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-13.4% per year) and Australia (-38.0% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms exports from Pakistan, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Canada totaled +35.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+11.1% per year) and Australia (-24.7% per year).

In 2021, the average inactive yeast export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -24.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+121.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2021, overseas purchases of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms increased by 2.1% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,129%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, inactive yeast imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 956%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), France (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of inactive yeast imports to Pakistan, together accounting for 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Iran, Germany, Austria, Singapore and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 19%.
