Luggage Market Size in Pakistan

After five years of growth, the Pakistani luggage market decreased by -10.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +93.6% against 2015 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of luggage and handbags decreased by -11.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 101%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 57%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of luggage exports from Pakistan, with a combined 53% share of total exports. The UK, Brazil, Australia, Italy, Finland, Taiwan (Chinese), Chile, Canada, Tanzania and Afghanistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Finland (with a CAGR of +17.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for luggage exported from Pakistan were Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and Australia ($X), together accounting for 50% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Italy, Brazil, Canada, Chile, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan (Chinese), Finland, Tanzania and Afghanistan, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average luggage export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 228%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+43.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of luggage and handbags were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports recorded a mild expansion. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of luggage to Pakistan, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, luggage imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +3.0%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of luggage and handbags to Pakistan, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.7% share of total imports.
