The Pakistani nutmeg, mace and cardamom market reduced to $X in 2022, shrinking by -12.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -25.9% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 3,373%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,681%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Pakistan, with a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X kg), more than tenfold. Australia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled +4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+42.3% per year) and Australia (+3.5% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports from Pakistan, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates totaled +23.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+28.0% per year) and the United States (+11.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 148% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+80.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2022, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports into Pakistan contracted markedly to X tons, waning by -24% against the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +3.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 81%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Guatemala (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamom to Pakistan, with a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from Guatemala exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Guatemala was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+16.8% per year) and China (+43.0% per year).

In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms to Pakistan, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Guatemala amounted to +7.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+38.0% per year) and Indonesia (+21.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
