The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 223% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic container exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 249%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic container exports from Pakistan, together accounting for 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Cameroon, Romania, the UK, Djibouti, Mexico and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +214.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic container exported from Pakistan were Afghanistan ($X), Bahrain ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Cameroon, the UK, Djibouti, Turkey and Romania, which together accounted for a further 23%.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +239.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average plastic container export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of plastic containers was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest plastic container supplier to Pakistan, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic container imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +17.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-8.1% per year) and Malaysia (+1.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the largest plastic container suppliers to Pakistan, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +8.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average plastic container import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 35% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
