Potato Market Size in Pakistan

After three years of growth, the Pakistani potato market decreased by -10.1% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

The average yield of potatoes in Pakistan amounted to X tons per ha in 2021, approximately mirroring 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average potato yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of potatoes in Pakistan amounted to X ha, increasing by 2.8% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Pakistan

In 2021, shipments abroad of potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 202% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 139% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the main destinations of potato exports from Pakistan, together comprising 63% of total exports. Russia, Qatar, Malaysia and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +84.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from Pakistan were Afghanistan ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 58% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +113.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 37%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of potatoes, when their volume decreased by -63% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,912%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 1,325%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest potato supplier to Pakistan, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Afghanistan (X tons), fivefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at +16.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Afghanistan (+13.8% per year) and China (+46.0% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Pakistan, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 3.8% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands amounted to +19.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Afghanistan (+21.7% per year) and China (+53.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, potato import price decreased by -10.6% against 2018 indices. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
