In 2021, the Pakistani silicone market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a remarkable increase. Silicone consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 127%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, silicone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bahrain (X tons) was the main destination for silicone exports from Pakistan, with a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, silicone exports to Bahrain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bahrain stood at +55.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+18.7% per year) and Spain (-6.4% per year).

In value terms, Bahrain ($X) remains the key foreign market for silicones (in primary forms) exports from Pakistan, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bahrain totaled +48.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-3.2% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+22.9% per year).

The average silicone export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 38%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of silicones (in primary forms) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, silicone imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of silicone to Pakistan, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, silicone imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +36.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+5.6% per year) and Turkey (+9.9% per year).
