After two years of growth, shipments abroad of soap decreased by -21% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, soap exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for soap exports from Pakistan, accounting for a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, soap exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Afghanistan (X tons), threefold. Madagascar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany stood at +212.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Afghanistan (-11.8% per year) and Madagascar (+40.0% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for soap exports from Pakistan, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +212.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Afghanistan (-15.7% per year) and Madagascar (+29.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average soap export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 63% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of soap was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 85%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soap imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 69%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of soap imports to Pakistan, with a combined 41% share of total imports. China, Turkey, the UK, Malaysia, the United States, Vietnam and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +48.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest soap suppliers to Pakistan, with a combined 39% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, the UK, Turkey, the United States, Malaysia, Germany and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +46.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average soap import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -19.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
