In 2021, the Pakistani wallpaper market increased by 117% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption saw a significant expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Pakistan

In 2021, wallpaper exports from Pakistan declined significantly to X tons, with a decrease of -95.6% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 1,605% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, wallpaper exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 1,504% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for wallpaper exports from Pakistan, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, wallpaper exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Oman (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X kg), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +11.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+8.3% per year) and the UK (+34.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for wallpaper exported from Pakistan were Saudi Arabia ($X), the UK ($X) and Oman ($X), together accounting for 65% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +115.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 64% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper export price increased by +170.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2021, purchases abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 162% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wallpaper imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest wallpaper supplier to Pakistan, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, wallpaper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +32.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+50.7% per year) and Malaysia (+5.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wallpaper and wall coverings to Pakistan, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

In 2021, the average wallpaper import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -30.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper import price decreased by -41.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 58% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
