Wheat Market Size in Pakistan
In 2022, the Pakistani wheat market decreased by -1.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 21,984% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wheat exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 19,421% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Yemen (X tons) was the main destination for wheat exports from Pakistan, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, wheat exports to Yemen exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (X tons), fivefold. Bangladesh (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Yemen totaled -6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (-6.9% per year) and Bangladesh (-28.4% per year).
In value terms, Yemen ($X) remains the key foreign market for wheat exports from Pakistan, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Yemen stood at -9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (-9.8% per year) and Bangladesh (-35.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Wheat Imports
Imports into Pakistan
In 2022, approx. X tons of wheat were imported into Pakistan; waning by -3.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 75%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wheat imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 56%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wheat to Pakistan, accounting for a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, wheat imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Romania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia stood at +25.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+41.5% per year) and Ukraine (+9.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest wheat suppliers to Pakistan were Russia ($X), Romania ($X) and Ukraine ($X), together comprising 50% of total imports. Bulgaria, Brazil, France, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +68.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded notable growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+15.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
