Wood Charcoal Market Size in Pakistan

The Pakistani wood charcoal market reduced modestly to $X in 2021, dropping by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of wood charcoal, when their volume decreased by -7.7% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 711% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 398%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the main destinations of wood charcoal exports from Pakistan, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +50.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wood charcoal exported from Pakistan were Afghanistan ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +22.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average wood charcoal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2021, purchases abroad of wood charcoal increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 128%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 85%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of wood charcoal imports to Pakistan, together comprising 77% of total imports. Italy, Malaysia and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +72.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Italy ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the largest wood charcoal suppliers to Pakistan, with a combined 68% share of total imports. China, Malaysia and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +88.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average wood charcoal import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
