The exports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 4,930%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Costa Rica (X units) was the main destination for exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Panama, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Costa Rica exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Nicaragua (X units), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Guatemala (X units), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Costa Rica stood at +79.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nicaragua (+62.1% per year) and Guatemala (+52.2% per year).

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports from Panama, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nicaragua ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Costa Rica totaled +71.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nicaragua (+72.5% per year) and Guatemala (+60.0% per year).

The average export price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -38.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Costa Rica ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Panama

In 2022, supplies from abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased by 314% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 2,914% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 3,903% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Colombia (X units), Mexico (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Panama, with a combined 87% share of total imports. The United States, Hong Kong SAR, Free Zones and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +179.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +220.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased by +43.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 73%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
