The Dominican Republic (X units), Costa Rica (X units) and Jamaica (X units) were the main destinations of smart card exports from Panama, with a combined 81% share of total exports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 578% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) imported into Panama dropped to X units, falling by -3.4% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 2,536% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, smart card imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 1,856%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of smart card to Panama, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, smart card imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X units), threefold. Hong Kong SAR (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +78.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+26.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+119.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest smart card suppliers to Panama were Mexico ($X), Spain ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 75% of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +133.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
