The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of paperboard case materials was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 159% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Guyana (X tons) was the main destination for paperboard case material exports from Panama, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, paperboard case material exports to Guyana exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Costa Rica (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by El Salvador (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Guyana stood at +205.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (-10.5% per year) and El Salvador (+13.2% per year).

In value terms, Guyana ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for paperboard case materials exports from Panama, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by El Salvador, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Guyana amounted to +175.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (-11.0% per year) and El Salvador (+6.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average paperboard case material export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 37%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Guatemala ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) and Costa Rica ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Panama

In 2022, overseas purchases of paperboard case materials decreased by -22.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 174%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) was the main supplier of paperboard case material to Panama, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, paperboard case material imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (X tons), more than tenfold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +45.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (-23.3% per year) and Sweden (-24.4% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paperboard case materials to Panama, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with a 3.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +33.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (-19.5% per year) and Italy (+64.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paperboard case material import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paperboard case material import price increased by +9.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
