In 2022, the Panamanian playing cards market increased by 23% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, faced a deep contraction. Playing cards consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of playing cards exported from Panama skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, playing cards exports rose to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Honduras (X kg), Colombia (X kg) and El Salvador (X kg) were the main destinations of playing cards exports from Panama, with a combined 54% share of total exports. Brazil, Barbados, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Barbados (with a CAGR of -5.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the key foreign market for playing cards exports from Panama, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Barbados ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Colombia amounted to -36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Barbados (-3.9% per year) and Brazil (-31.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average playing cards export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -46.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 70%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Panama
In 2022, overseas purchases of playing cards were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, playing cards imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Free Zones (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of playing cards imports to Panama, with a combined 96% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Free Zones (with a CAGR of +64.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of playing cards to Panama, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Free Zones ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States stood at +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Free Zones (+89.1% per year) and China (-28.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average playing cards import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 243%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Free Zones (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
