Durum Wheat Market Size in Paraguay

After two years of decline, the Paraguayan durum wheat market increased by 5.7% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Durum wheat consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Paraguay, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, durum wheat exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam amounted to -9.7%.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from Paraguay, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

In 2022, the average durum wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 55% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed strong growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cameroon (+42.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 130%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main durum wheat supplier to Paraguay, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
