Alumina Market Size in Peru
The Peruvian alumina market declined dramatically to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -34% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of alumina increased by 65% to X kg, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 603% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, alumina exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 908%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Dominican Republic (X kg) was the main destination for alumina exports from Peru, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile (X kg), with a 2.1% share of total exports. Bolivia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Dominican Republic totaled +83.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+12.2% per year) and Bolivia (-37.4% per year).
In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for alumina exports from Peru, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 1.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Dominican Republic amounted to +19.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-2.6% per year) and Chile (-14.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average alumina export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 310% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (+43.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Alumina Imports
Imports into Peru
In 2022, the amount of alumina imported into Peru contracted significantly to X tons, shrinking by -29.1% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 218% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, alumina imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 247% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest alumina supplier to Peru, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, alumina imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +78.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+25.0% per year) and the United States (-13.9% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest alumina suppliers to Peru, together comprising 77% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +52.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average alumina import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
