Indonesia (X tons) was the main destination for steel and iron articles exports from Peru, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, steel and iron articles exports to Indonesia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Chile (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Indonesia totaled +94.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+63.4% per year) and Chile (-0.8% per year).
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for articles of iron or steel exports from Peru, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Indonesia stood at +116.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+8.3% per year) and China (+59.1% per year).

Imports into Peru
In 2022, approx. X tons of articles of iron or steel were imported into Peru; shrinking by -19% on 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Moreover, steel and iron articles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), sixfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+3.5% per year) and Italy (+1.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of articles of iron or steel to Peru, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +11.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-3.4% per year) and Italy (-3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average steel and iron articles import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 66%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
