Avocado Market Size in Peru

In 2022, the Peruvian avocado market increased by 20% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Avocado Production in Peru

In value terms, avocado production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of avocados in Peru reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -6.4% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average avocado yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of avocados were harvested in Peru; almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 19% against the previous year. The avocado harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of avocados decreased by -11.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 117%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, avocado exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of avocado exports from Peru, together comprising 63% of total exports. Chile, the UK, China and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +77.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest markets for avocado exported from Peru worldwide, together accounting for 66% of total exports. The UK, Chile, Japan and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +75.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average avocado export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 21%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Avocado Imports

Imports into Peru

In 2022, the amount of avocados imported into Peru shrank remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -41.4% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 296%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, avocado imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 261%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of avocado to Peru, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, avocado imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+30.7% per year) and Colombia (-24.4% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of avocados to Peru, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+43.7% per year) and Colombia (-16.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average avocado import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, avocado import price increased by +35.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 52%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+10.1%).
