Magnetic Card Market Size in Peru

The Peruvian magnetic card market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw a precipitous shrinkage. Magnetic card consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of cards incorporating a magnetic stripe were finally on the rise to reach X units after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 200%. The exports peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnetic card exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 243% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile (X units) was the main destination for magnetic card exports from Peru, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, magnetic card exports to Chile exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Colombia (X units), fourfold. Argentina (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Chile amounted to +38.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (-14.9% per year) and Argentina (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the key foreign market for cards incorporating a magnetic stripe exports from Peru, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 7.2% share.

For the fourth consecutive year, Peru recorded decline in purchases abroad of cards incorporating a magnetic stripe, which decreased by -1.6% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, magnetic card imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X units), Spain (X units) and Colombia (X units) were the main suppliers of magnetic card imports to Peru, together comprising 67% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of -2.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
