In 2022, overseas shipments of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood decreased by -41.2% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 250% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood barrel exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 413% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X units) was the main destination for wood barrel exports from Peru, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, wood barrel exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (X units), fourfold.

In 2022, imports of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood into Peru contracted notably to X units, declining by -33.9% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 806%. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood barrel imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 1,201% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Chile (X units), the United States (X units) and Spain (X units) were the main suppliers of wood barrel imports to Peru, together accounting for 83% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +37.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
