Common Clay Market Size in Peru

The Peruvian common clay market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, dropping by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the market value increased by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common clay production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 9.7%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of common clay decreased by -17.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, common clay exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +1.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Free Zones (X tons) was the main destination for common clay exports from Peru, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, common clay exports to Free Zones exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ecuador (X tons), twofold. Venezuela (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Free Zones stood at +23.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ecuador (+19.6% per year) and Venezuela (-13.9% per year).

In value terms, Free Zones ($X) remains the key foreign market for common clay exports from Peru, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Venezuela, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Free Zones stood at +16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ecuador (+17.2% per year) and Venezuela (-16.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average common clay export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 50%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Venezuela ($X per ton) and Colombia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ecuador ($X per ton) and Free Zones ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (-2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Peru

In 2022, purchases abroad of common clay decreased by -4.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common clay imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of common clay imports to Peru, with a combined 93% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, which accounted for a further 5%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +76.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
