Date Market Size in Peru

In 2022, the Peruvian date market increased by 110% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption posted a pronounced expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Date Production in Peru

In value terms, date production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 60%. Date production peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The average yield of dates in Peru expanded slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 3.5% on 2021. Overall, the yield indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, date yield decreased by -3.3% against 2020 indices. Exports from Peru

After five years of growth, shipments abroad of dates decreased by -18.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 60%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, date exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 75%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for date exports from Peru, with a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, date exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), twofold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at +123.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+12.6% per year) and Malaysia (+20.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for date exported from Peru were the Netherlands ($X), the UK ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 45% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +26.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average date export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+44.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Peru

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of dates, when their volume decreased by -31.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 1,564% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, date imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. In 2022, China (X tons) was the main supplier of date to Peru, accounting for a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, date imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tunisia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +32.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+20.3% per year) and the Netherlands (-1.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dates to Peru, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +33.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+31.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average date import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
