Garlic Market Size in Peru

After two years of growth, the Peruvian garlic market decreased by -0.4% to $X in 2022. Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 178%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 258% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Peru, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +48.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), the United States ($X) and Ecuador ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for garlic exported from Peru worldwide, together accounting for 89% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +57.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Peru

After five years of decline, purchases abroad of garlic increased by 12% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 3,952%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, faced a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 7,956%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main garlic supplier to Peru, accounting for a approx. 99.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -34.7%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Peru.
