Lemon And Lime Market Size in Peru

The Peruvian lemon and lime market reached $X in 2022, picking up by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 67%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 45%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Chile (X tons) was the main destination for lemon and lime exports from Peru, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, lemon and lime exports to Chile exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Chile totaled +14.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+27.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+44.5% per year).

In value terms, Chile ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for lemon and lime exported from Peru worldwide, with a combined 68% share of total exports. Panama, the United States, Germany, Bolivia and Ecuador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Among the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +59.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average lemon and lime export price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bolivia (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Peru

In 2022, imports of lemons and limes into Peru dropped markedly to X tons, waning by -34.1% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 920%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 772%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Chile (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of lemon and lime imports to Peru, with a combined 94% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +54.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lemons and limes to Peru, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 19% share.
