Mate Market Size in Peru

The Peruvian mate market reached $X in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption continues to indicate significant growth. Mate consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of mate decreased by -7.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 301%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mate exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 352% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X kg), Spain (X kg) and the United States (X kg) were the main destinations of mate exports from Peru, with a combined 61% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +79.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for mate exported from Peru worldwide, together comprising 57% of total exports.

In 2022, the average mate export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 37%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Peru

In 2022, approx. X tons of mate were imported into Peru; surging by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 403%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mate imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 529%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In 2022, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of mate to Peru, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, mate imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Brazil (X tons), with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina stood at +21.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+28.4% per year) and Brazil (+9.6% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mate to Peru, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina totaled +24.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+27.6% per year) and Brazil (+7.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mate import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
