Pumpkin Market Size in Peru

The Peruvian pumpkin market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a noticeable contraction. Pumpkin consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Peru contracted slightly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -2.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 65%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 113%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Chile (X tons) was the main destination for pumpkin exports from Peru, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, pumpkin exports to Chile exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), eightfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Chile totaled +17.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+19.1% per year) and the UK (-2.8% per year).

In value terms, Chile ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest markets for pumpkin exported from Peru worldwide, with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +64.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pumpkin export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin export price decreased by -1.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+18.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
