Soap Market Size in Peru

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Peruvian soap market, when its value decreased by -20.2% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In 2021, exports of soap from Peru reduced dramatically to X tons, which is down by -35.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, soap exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bolivia (X tons) was the main destination for soap exports from Peru, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, soap exports to Bolivia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Colombia (X tons), eightfold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bolivia stood at +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+8.8% per year) and Chile (+19.1% per year).

In value terms, Bolivia ($X) remains the key foreign market for soap exports from Peru, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bolivia amounted to +1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+1.2% per year) and Chile (+17.0% per year).

The average soap export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to El Salvador (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Peru

In 2021, purchases abroad of soap decreased by -6.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, soap imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +35.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Colombia (X tons), China (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of soap imports to Peru, together comprising 79% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +56.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Colombia ($X), China ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the largest soap suppliers to Peru, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
