In 2021, the Philippine composite paperboard market increased by 5.6% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a remarkable increase. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of composite paper and paperboard, when their volume increased by 2% to X kg. In general, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,126% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, composite paperboard exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 677% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X kg) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from the Philippines, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Micronesia (X kg), eightfold. Canada (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Singapore totaled -1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Micronesia (+34.4% per year) and Canada (+58.4% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Micronesia ($X) constituted the largest markets for composite paperboard exported from the Philippines worldwide, with a combined 88% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, the UK, Indonesia and Palau, which together accounted for a further 10%.
Canada, with a CAGR of +72.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average composite paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Palau ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Philippines
In 2021, supplies from abroad of composite paper and paperboard increased by 3.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 642%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 378% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main suppliers of composite paperboard imports to the Philippines, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Indonesia, the Netherlands, Japan, India, Singapore and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.3%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +60.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest composite paperboard suppliers to the Philippines, with a combined 74% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +64.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average composite paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
