After two years of growth, overseas shipments of electronic chips decreased by -12.1% to X units in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2017 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, electronic chip exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2017 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% over the last four-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +78.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 63%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Hong Kong SAR (X units), China (X units) and Singapore (X units) were the main destinations of electronic chip exports from the Philippines, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Germany, the United States, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Mexico, the Czech Republic, South Korea and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 28%.
From 2017 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +19.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for electronic chip exported from the Philippines were Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 64% share of total exports. Germany, Mexico, Taiwan (Chinese), the United States, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Among the main countries of destination, Mexico, with a CAGR of +31.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average electronic chip export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a strong expansion from 2017 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +13.1% over the last four-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, electronic chip export price increased by +63.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2017 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+31.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Philippines
In 2021, overseas purchases of electronic chips decreased by -8.3% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2017 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last four years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -14.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, electronic chip imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) constituted the largest electronic chip supplier to the Philippines, with a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, electronic chip imports from Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X units), with an 11% share.
From 2017 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-1.8% per year) and Thailand (+18.9% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest supplier of electronic chips to the Philippines, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 10% share.
From 2017 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Taiwan (Chinese) totaled +14.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+10.7% per year) and South Korea (+14.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average electronic chip import price amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2017 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% over the last four-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, electronic chip import price increased by +52.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
