Exports from the Philippines
In 2021, overseas shipments of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 38% to X kg, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 598% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 738% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Papua New Guinea (X kg) was the main destination for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from the Philippines, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports to Papua New Guinea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Palau (X kg), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Micronesia (X kg), with a 22% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Papua New Guinea amounted to +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Palau (-5.6% per year) and Micronesia (+24.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from the Philippines were Palau ($X), Micronesia ($X) and Papua New Guinea ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports. Brunei Darussalam lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 6.7%.
Brunei Darussalam, with a CAGR of +15.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -27.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palau ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Papua New Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Palau (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Philippines
In 2021, approx. X tons of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines were imported into the Philippines; increasing by 18% on the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +112.6% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 81%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine supplier to the Philippines, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand amounted to +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+34.8% per year) and Bangladesh (-0.6% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines to the Philippines, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 6.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Thailand stood at +6.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+22.0% per year) and Bangladesh (+13.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine import price increased by +18.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 40%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+20.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
