In 2021, the Philippine baby food market decreased by -8.3% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +57.2% against 2016 indices. Baby food consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, baby food production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. In 2021, baby food exports from the Philippines fell to X tons, declining by -7.3% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 933%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, baby food exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 926%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for baby food exports from the Philippines, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, baby food exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sri Lanka (X tons), threefold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia stood at +17.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+18.8% per year) and Vietnam (+11.6% per year).
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for food preparations for infants exports from the Philippines, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Malaysia amounted to +24.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+30.9% per year) and Vietnam (+18.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average baby food export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, baby food export price increased by +55.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Pakistan ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Philippines
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of food preparations for infants decreased by -19.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 109%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, baby food imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 113%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of baby food to the Philippines, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, baby food imports from Singapore exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Singapore totaled +18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+1.0% per year) and Germany (-3.7% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constituted the largest supplier of food preparations for infants to the Philippines, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Singapore amounted to +21.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+1.4% per year) and Malaysia (+1.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average baby food import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, baby food import price decreased by -2.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 53% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+27.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
