Canned Meat Market Size in the Philippines

After five years of growth, the Philippine canned meat market decreased by -7.6% to $X in 2021. In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, canned meat exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) were the main destinations of canned meat exports from the Philippines, with a combined 77% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Australia, Bahrain, Hong Kong SAR, Brunei Darussalam, Taiwan (Chinese), Kuwait and Kiribati, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kiribati (with a CAGR of +32.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for canned meat exported from the Philippines were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Japan ($X) and Qatar ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports. Australia, Bahrain, Hong Kong SAR, Brunei Darussalam, Kiribati, Taiwan (Chinese) and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main countries of destination, Kiribati, with a CAGR of +33.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average canned meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of canned meat were imported into the Philippines; jumping by 49% compared with 2020. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +85.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
