In 2021, the Philippine motor vehicle engine market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a sharp decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 207% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for motor vehicle engine exports from the Philippines, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, motor vehicle engine exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Micronesia (X tons), threefold. India (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam totaled -26.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Micronesia (+42.6% per year) and India (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) exports from the Philippines, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Micronesia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Vietnam totaled -31.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Micronesia (+43.3% per year) and Thailand (-6.6% per year).

The average motor vehicle engine export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a sharp descent. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 279% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of motor vehicle engine imports to the Philippines, together comprising 57% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the largest motor vehicle engine suppliers to the Philippines, with a combined 55% share of total imports.
