Papaya Market Size in the Philippines

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Philippine papaya market, when its value decreased by -0.7% to $X. In general, consumption recorded a slight descent. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of papayas in the Philippines fell slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 10%. Papaya exports from the Philippines surged to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 74% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 66%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of papaya exports from the Philippines, together accounting for 75% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, New Zealand, South Korea and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +144.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Singapore ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for papaya exported from the Philippines worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, New Zealand, South Korea and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +210.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average papaya export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -23% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, papaya export price increased by +41.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 62%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Japan ($X per ton) and New Zealand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+26.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
