Tea Market Size in the Philippines

The Philippine tea market fell dramatically to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -20.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Tea consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third consecutive year, the Philippines recorded decline in shipments abroad of tea, which decreased by -52.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports faced a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 125%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for tea exports from the Philippines, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X kg), sevenfold. The United States (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore amounted to -4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-27.2% per year) and the United States (-28.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from the Philippines were the United States ($X), Singapore ($X) and Canada ($X), together accounting for 76% of total exports. Bahrain, Bermuda and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of -2.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average tea export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 93% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed buoyant growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+21.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Philippines

In 2022, approx. X tons of tea were imported into the Philippines; shrinking by -49.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), China (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to the Philippines, together accounting for 48% of total imports. Sri Lanka, Poland, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, Vietnam, the United States and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +33.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Poland ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest tea suppliers to the Philippines, together comprising 59% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +41.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tea import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 140% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted strong growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+27.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
